NILS LOFGREN - Catch Up review

OUR VERDICT: Energy!

The last time we saw Nils, we were with 60,000 others at Wembley Stadium, as he sang and strummed with his Boss for the past 30 years, Bruce Springsteen. Tonight if was just him and his musical sidekick, Greg Verlotta in the intimacy of The Stables theatre. Straight away we knew it was going to be busy. We were directed to a parking area at the back of the theatre and had to park in front of Cleo Laine's garage!

Nils has been round the block, and that gives him a wealth of stories to go along with the songs. Both funny and poignant tales; from explaining that his new hips have caused him to give up the backward trampoline flips, to hearing about his much missed E Street cohort, Clarence Clemons. When he sang "Miss You, C" there was hardly a dry eye in the house.

The mood was lightened when he sang his heart felt plea to his hero, "Keith Don't Go." Then he moved on to keyboard for his take on "Goin' Back," an old favourite. We had him play acoustic and electric guitars, plus a Celtic Harp, all done brilliantly.

"The Sun Hasn't Set On This Boy Yet" really had everyone up on their feet. Finishing off with "I Came To Dance"(which they BOTH did) and his signature song, "Shine Silently," you become aware of what a vast catalogue of great songs Nils has. So much so, that we got his 10 disc box set afterwards.

What a treat to see such a showman in as intimate a setting as The Stables. This was a wonderful way to spent two hours of your life. No break either.
